2021 Southern Wrestling
Southern lost four high impact starters, including a pair of State Medalists, and some strong contributors from last year's Group 5 Championship team. The Rams, however, are as good as anyone in the state when it comes to reloading with their usual mix of strong returning starters, talented freshmen, and "next man up" from last year's depth chart. This year appears to be no different.
It's a young group down low from 106-132. The top returner is Conor Collins, who is coming off an outstanding freshman season in which he captured the Region 8 & District 29 Titles, before finishing just one win short of a medal in AC. Also returning with Collins is fellow sophomore and returning starter, Nick Bennet, a 16-bout winner in 2020. Juniors Kellen Bischoff and Chris Lubeski and sophomore Tyler Verge look to fill that "next man up" role for the Rams in the 120/126 range. Impact newcomers Dylan Verge and Matt Henrich, one of the top-ranked incoming freshman in the state, also figure to play big roles down low.
Southern has their most experience returning in the stretch from 138-170. The senior duo of Eddie Hummel and Matt Brielmeier gives the Rams a big time 1-2 punch to start things off in the middle. Hummel, who has 90 career wins, is a 2-time State Medalist, finishing 6th in 2019, and 3rd in 2020. Brielmeier, who is committed to King's College next year, is a 3-time District Medalist, including a champion in D29 last season. Cole Velardi projects to be at 170 this season. He is coming off a great rookie season, winning 33 matches and punching a ticket to Atlantic City. Also in the middle are returning lettermen Evan Graczyk and Leighton Fessman, both seniors, and junior Nate Bischoff. The Rams also have some more promising freshman looking to make an impact here in Mitch Bivona and Tyler Chase.
There will be mostly new faces from 182-up, with senior Stephen Jennings, a District Champion last season, the lone returning starter.
Obviously, with no team postseason this year, the Rams will look towards winning their first A-South title since 2018. In that regard, we circle the date of March 26th as the Rams travel to Brick Memorial in a key A-South showdown.
