145 wins, 6 District medal winners (3 champs), 3
Region medal winners (1 champ), and a state runner-up. Not to mention
almost 400 career wins... Eh, no problem. Once again, the Southern
Regional Rams are loaded with talent and depth in both their veterans as
well as with their newcomers.
The bottom half of the lineup (106-145) will miss the 1-2 punch of Kyle Casaletto and Bubba Lanno, but everyone else is back and there are several talented newcomers that are ready to step right into the mix. The key returners are sophomore Zach Wilhelm, who placed 8th at States, and returning District placers Jake Campana (1st), Kyle Davis (2nd), and Chris Serpico (3rd), all juniors.
A half dozen wrestlers with at least twelve varsity matches in 2011 return for the Rams in the upper half of the lineup. Juniors Cody Smead and Cory Case are returning Region qualifiers, and are joined by seniors Steve Johns, Steve Hodgson, and Zeb Collins to give the Rams a well-seasoned group here.
Some of the records of the returners may not jump off the screen, but you have to keep in mind that from their tourney stops at The Beast of the East and The Mustang Classic, the A-South slate, an out of Shore schedule that features perennial state powers, the SCT, and the Group 4 post-season, the Rams wrestle one of the state's most brutal schedules year in and year out. 10 wins in Ram Town is probably about 20 most anywhere else. It's one of the reasons this team is in contention for the A-South, SCT, Sectional, Group, and District titles year in and year out, and this season will be no different. Expect Southern to once again be in competition for all those titles, as well as in the hunt for the #1 spot in the Shore.
Wrestler To Watch - (So) Zach Wilhelm
Unless someone slipped through the cracks and I missed them (which I don't think I did, but I will accept any emails telling me I'm wrong if I did) Wilhelm became the first Southern Regional wrestler to medal at the NJSIAA Tournament as a freshman. When you're the "first ever" to do anything at this program, it is quite the accomplishment.
UPDATE: Yep, I blew it. Luke Lanno placed 6th as a freshman in 2004! All apologies to Luke, as I definitely shouldn't have missed that one. Thanks to those that emailed and corrected me on that one.

Unless someone slipped through the cracks and I missed them (which I don't think I did, but I will accept any emails telling me I'm wrong if I did) Wilhelm became the first Southern Regional wrestler to medal at the NJSIAA Tournament as a freshman. When you're the "first ever" to do anything at this program, it is quite the accomplishment.
UPDATE: Yep, I blew it. Luke Lanno placed 6th as a freshman in 2004! All apologies to Luke, as I definitely shouldn't have missed that one. Thanks to those that emailed and corrected me on that one.
